Disaster Risk Management for Glacier Lake Outburst Floods in India

Advancing GLOF Risk Management in the Himalayas

As part of the India DRM initiative under “Climate Actions in the Himalayas,” the consortium of EClim reserach group, Geotest, and the University of Geneva is responsible for the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) component, addressing growing risks from glacial melt due to climate change. The project focuses on the Indian state of Sikkim, where critical lakes such as South Lhonak and Shako Cho have been identified for detailed risk assessment and monitoring. Activities include hazard and exposure mapping, installation of monitoring stations, support for the implementation of siphoning systems to reduce lake levels, and development of early warning systems. The work also involves collaboration with national and state authorities, including NDMA and SDMA of Sikkim, for the creation of response plans and training programs for vulnerable downstream communities. Drawing on Swiss expertise in mountain risk management, the project aims to strengthen local capacities and resilience to GLOFs, ensuring that scientific results are translated into effective risk reduction and preparedness actions.
