Glacier Lake Outburst Floods in Central Asia: Knowledege Management Platform
Background
Central Asia is experiencing significant challenges due to the adverse effects of climate change, particularly in relation to the rapid melting of glaciers and the formation of glacial lakes. This region is highly sensitive to climate change, with limited capacity to adapt to the resulting impacts. The melting glaciers increase the risk of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which can cause devastating water-related disasters. These events pose a major threat to vulnerable populations, including socio-economically disadvantaged groups, indigenous communities, ethnic minorities, women, children, and the elderly. As the rate of glacier loss continues to accelerate, the danger of GLOFs grows, threatening both lives and livelihoods across the region.
Objectives
The primary objective of this project is to strengthen climate change adaptation in Central Asia by reducing the risks and vulnerabilities associated with GLOFs. The project focuses on assessing the vulnerability of at-risk communities, enhancing monitoring and response capacities, establishing early warning systems, and raising awareness among decision-makers and local populations. By addressing these key areas, the project aims to build resilience and improve the ability of communities to withstand the impacts of climate change. This initiative aligns with global frameworks like the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, seeking to promote sustainable and resilient development in Central Asia.
