This fall, the EClim research group gathered for a reflective retreat in the stunningly colorful Engadin mountains. Our discussions centered on two essential themes for academic and professional life: mental health and the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in research.
🧠 Mental Health
We explored the importance of:
- Self-worth and self-esteem
- Social connections and relationships
These often-overlooked elements are crucial for personal well-being and directly influence how we work, collaborate, and succeed. We reminded ourselves of the importance of creating space for mental health—something too easily overridden by daily demands.
🤖 Working with AI
Our AI discussions focused on:
- Output and performance
- Skill development and preservation
While AI tools like large language models can boost productivity, they may also reduce brain activity and connectivity, as shown by recent neurological studies. This prompted us to reflect on which tasks we should delegate to AI and which skills we must actively preserve and cultivate—a particularly important topic for both researchers and students.
🙏 A heartfelt thank you to all EClim members for an open, respectful, and enriching exchange. With participants from Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, New Zealand, France, Italy, Peru, the USA, and Switzerland, our diverse perspectives are one of our greatest strengths.
