Periods of water scarcity are expected to become increasingly frequent and severe as climate change intensifies. But what are the economic consequences, and how can we adapt?
EClim members Saeid Ario Vaghefi and Veruska Muccione are contributing to a new research effort under the Swiss NCCS-Impacts program, as part of the project “Costs of Climate Impacts in Switzerland.” The study aims to model impact chains that link water scarcity to:
- Rising energy demand (e.g., for cooling)
- Increasing pressure on building infrastructure
- Higher energy costs and strain on energy supply
- Macroeconomic consequences and adaptation pathways
This interdisciplinary project will analyze costs and adaptation options in response to projected increases in water stress, helping Switzerland prepare for a climate-resilient future.
