Two months after the devastating ice-rock avalanche from Birch Glacier and Kleines Nesthorn destroyed large parts of the Swiss mountain village of Blatten, detailed reconstruction plans and cost estimates have been made public during a recent community assembly and press conference in Lötschental.
🔷 Key figures:
- CHF 42 million for natural hazard protection measures
- CHF 31 million for new access infrastructure (road & cable car)
- CHF 13 million for support to local economy and tourism
- CHF 320 million expected from insurance payouts
- CHF 100 million contribution from the canton of Valais
The plans are ambitious and rely in part on emergency legislation to meet tight deadlines. While speed is framed as necessary for insurance reasons, the insurance sector has reportedly signaled flexibility.
