As climate-related disasters intensify in mountain regions—from the Blatten avalanche in Switzerland to the recent glacial flood in Rasuwa/Purepu, Nepal—the need for robust early warning systems (EWS) and hazard monitoring is more urgent than ever.
EClim’s Simon Allen joined an expert panel hosted by The Stimson Center on July 30, sharing insights on designing and implementing EWS in high mountain environments, with lessons from both the Alps and the Himalayas.
The webinar—“Early Warning in the Cryosphere: Lessons from the Alps to the Himalayas”—brought together experts from academia and the private sector, including:
- Simon Allen (University of Zurich / EClim)
- Finu Shrestha
- Maxence Carrel
- Wei Yang
Moderated by Austin Lord and Jakob Steiner, the discussion addressed:
- Future directions for disaster risk management (DRM) in the cryosphere
- Recent glacier-related disasters
- Technical and institutional challenges of EWS
- The need for regionally adapted, community-responsive systems
