This comprehensive review analyzes more than 6,000 peer-reviewed publications using human coding and natural language processing (NLP) to identify key trends and gaps in the field of climate change education (CCE) over the past 15 years.

Key findings:

  • Education supports climate action by enhancing knowledge and influencing policy.
  • Core topics in CCE include adaptation, mitigation, disaster risk reduction, sustainability, and the role of youth as change agents.
  • The study emphasizes the importance of transformative learning practices and energy literacy.
  • Research is heavily concentrated in English-speaking countries, revealing a need for greater global diversity in education-focused climate research.

The authors call for stronger integration of CCE themes in policy-relevant assessments, such as IPCC reports, to better support an informed and engaged society equipped to address the climate crisis.
