How Much Finance Is Needed for Climate Loss and Damage?

EClim’s Christian Huggel highlights a recent publication by Tavoni et al. (2024) estimating the financial needs for climate-related loss and damage. Using three climate-economic models, the study finds that USD 400 billion per year will be needed by 2025 to address the increasing toll of climate impacts—far surpassing the roughly USD 700 million pledged so far to the new Loss and Damage Fund, most of which remains unallocated.

The paper also assesses donor and recipient responsibilities based on historical emissions, shedding light on equity and accountability in international climate finance.
