Glaciers Matter: Reflections from EClim Experts for World Water Day 2025

In a special feature leading up to United Nations World Water Day 2025, adelphi global and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) interviewed three experts on glaciers and their global significance—including EClim researchers Dr. Holger Frey and Dr. Simon Allen.

The conversation highlights the multidimensional importance of glaciers—not only as water sources, but also for their biological, social, political, and economic roles. Frey and Allen share their expertise on glacier-related hazards, risk assessment, and early warning systems in the Andes, Himalayas, and Central Asia.

Joined by Sonam Rinzin, an early-career scientist from Bhutan, the experts call for concrete action in 2025—not just events and workshops. They stress the urgent need to address the cascading impacts of glacier change on communities, ecosystems, and geopolitics.
